Alcon and RxSight Collaborate on Adjustable Presbyopia-Correcting Intraocular Lenses
Alcon and RxSight announced a strategic collaboration to develop the next generation of premium intraocular lenses (IOLs) for cataract surgery. The partnership combines Alcon’s expertise in IOL design with RxSight’s Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) technology, which enables surgeons to fine-tune a patient’s prescription after surgery using targeted ultraviolet light treatments. The goal is to create presbyopia-correcting lenses that provide greater flexibility and more precise visual outcomes than conventional implants.
This collaboration addresses one of the longstanding challenges in cataract surgery: predicting a patient’s final refractive outcome before surgery. Even with modern biometric measurements and advanced formulas, small refractive errors can leave patients needing glasses or requiring enhancement procedures. Adjustable lens technology shifts part of that decision-making to the postoperative period, allowing surgeons to optimize vision based on the patient’s actual healing and visual preferences.
For surgeons, this could represent a significant advancement in premium cataract care. Presbyopia-correcting IOLs—including multifocal and extended depth of focus (EDOF) lenses—offer greater spectacle independence but can also present tradeoffs such as glare, halos, or residual refractive error. A lens that can be adjusted after implantation may reduce those compromises and improve patient satisfaction, particularly for patients with high expectations for uncorrected vision.
From a business perspective, the announcement also reflects increasing competition within the premium cataract surgery market. As cataract procedures become increasingly refractive in nature, manufacturers are investing heavily in technologies that differentiate their products. If commercialized successfully, the partnership could expand adoption of adjustable lens technology well beyond its current footprint.
Although the collaboration is still in the development stage, its significance extends beyond a single product announcement. It reinforces a broader trend toward personalized ophthalmic care, where treatments can be customized after implantation rather than relying solely on preoperative predictions.
